Ireland's primary care system is facing a deepening crisis as a shortage of between 1,500 and 2,000 GPs leaves thousands of patients unable to register with a doctor, with rural areas in the north-west, north Mayo, Leitrim, and the border region experiencing 'medical desert' conditions. One-third of newly qualified Irish GPs emigrate annually, and the Irish College of GPs warns that demand for GP visits will increase by up to 30% by 2040 as the population ages. The HSE has expanded training places by 85% since 2017 but experts say the measures are insufficient.
