Retired Police Dog Recovers from Cannabis Scare Thanks to Charity

Heidie, a nine-year-old German Shepherd who served with Police Scotland for four years, has survived a frightening health scare after accidentally ingesting cannabis during an evening walk. The retired police dog, who lives with her former handler Jo Devlin in Motherwell, suddenly fell ill in early April, becoming unsteady on her feet. Her owner, Jo, was deeply concerned, initially fearing that the veteran canine was having a stroke. She rushed Heidie to an emergency vet in Glasgow for urgent treatment. After an examination, the vet delivered a surprising diagnosis: Heidie was not having a stroke but was suffering from a marijuana overdose. It is believed she had consumed a discarded cannabis product she found during her walk. The incident, first reported by the >Daily Record, highlights a growing and unexpected danger for pets in public spaces.

A Swift Recovery and a Helping Paw

At the veterinary clinic, Heidie was given medication to induce vomiting and was carefully monitored as she recovered from the effects of the drug. Fortunately, the treatment was successful, and the brave dog was soon back on her paws. However, the emergency treatment came with a hefty price tag of £540. This is where the Thin Blue Paw Foundation, a UK charity dedicated to supporting retired police and fire service dogs, stepped in. The foundation, which helps to cover the costs of veterinary care for retired service animals, paid the bill in full, ensuring that Heidie's owner was not left with a financial burden on top of the worry of her pet's health scare. Kieran Stanbridge, the founder of the charity, noted that this was a unique case, stating that Heidie is the first dog the foundation has had to support due to the consumption of an illegal drug. The story was also covered by >Glasgow Live.

A Well-Deserved Retirement

Heidie served with Police Scotland from 2018 until her retirement in 2022, where she was a valued member of the force. Now, in her retirement, she enjoys a more relaxed pace of life with Jo and her other dog, a Springer Spaniel named Leo. Her owner describes her as a happy and playful dog who enjoys her walks and playing with her companion. However, her old instincts have not completely disappeared. Jo notes that Heidie has a favourite stool by the window from where she likes to monitor her surroundings, a habit her owner affectionately calls "Paw Patrol." The incident is a reminder that even highly trained service animals are not immune to the everyday hazards of the world. Thanks to the quick thinking of her owner, the skill of the veterinary team, and the generosity of the Thin Blue Paw Foundation, Heidie is now safe and sound, back on patrol at her window, and enjoying her well-earned retirement.
