NHS to Launch At-Home Health Tests Via App as Wes Streeting Promises 'Doctor in Your Pocket'
The NHS is set to launch a 'HomeTest' service via its app as early as this month, offering patients basic at-home health checks for conditions including liver function, cholesterol, and prostate cancer, in a major expansion of digital healthcare that Health Secretary Wes Streeting has described as making the app 'a doctor in your pocket'.
What the Service Will Offer
The NHS HomeTest service will initially include tests for liver function, cholesterol levels, sexually transmitted diseases, and Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood checks for prostate cancer monitoring. Other areas under exploration include rheumatology, fertility, menstrual issues, and tests for antibiotic-resistant superbugs.
The initiative builds on existing NHS app services for HIV and bowel cancer testing, and aligns with Labour's 10-year health plan, which aims for 92% of patients to receive a diagnostic test, outpatient appointment, or operation within 18 weeks of a GP referral by 2029.
Reducing Pressure on Services
Officials anticipate that allowing patients to self-report vital health data through technology could significantly reduce the strain on healthcare services. The NHS has already announced 45 pilot programmes across 37 trusts in England, allowing direct access to specialist care via the NHS app, projected to free up 500,000 hospital appointments annually once fully implemented.
GP teams are currently delivering over 1.5 million appointments daily β a record high β partly due to practices offering patients online appointment choices. The HomeTest service is designed to further reduce the need for in-person visits for routine monitoring.
Concerns and Caveats
Experts have cautioned against creating a two-tier service, acknowledging that not all individuals may be able or willing to use the app. Ensuring equitable access for older patients and those without smartphones will be a key challenge for NHS England as the service rolls out.
What's Next
The HomeTest service is expected to launch in April 2026, with a phased rollout across England. The NHS app currently has tens of millions of registered users, making it one of the most widely used digital health platforms in the world.
