World Rugby's Inaugural Nations Championship Kicks Off in July with Twickenham Final
The inaugural World Rugby Nations Championship is set to launch in July 2026, bringing together 12 of the world's top rugby nations in a new biennial competition that will replace the traditional Autumn Internationals format and culminate in a Finals Weekend at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham, in late November.
The competition, which runs from 4 July to 29 November 2026, represents the most significant structural change to the international rugby calendar in decades and has been described by World Rugby as a transformative moment for the global game.
How It Works
The 12 participating nations are divided into two conferences. The European Conference comprises the six Six Nations teams β England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland, and Wales. The Rest of the World Conference includes the four Rugby Championship sides β Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa β plus Fiji and Japan.
Each team plays all six opponents from the opposing conference, with three home and three away matches spread across two international windows: the mid-year July window and the end-of-year November window. During July, European teams travel to play three fixtures against Rest of the World sides; in November, the southern hemisphere and Pacific nations travel north.
The top teams from each conference advance to the Nations Championship Final, while all 12 teams converge at Twickenham for Finals Weekend on 27-29 November, with each nation playing the equivalently ranked team from the other conference. The Grand Final takes place on Sunday 29 November.
Six Nations Context
The 2026 Six Nations Championship, which concluded in March, saw France claim their second consecutive title with a dramatic 48-46 victory over England in the final match. Ireland won the Triple Crown, while Italy achieved a historic first-ever win against England, triumphing 50-40. The Nations Championship will now build on the momentum generated by the Six Nations, with the same teams competing in a broader global context.
Why It Matters
For Irish and British rugby fans, the Nations Championship offers the prospect of home-and-away fixtures against the All Blacks, Springboks, Wallabies, and Pumas in a structured, meaningful competition β rather than the one-off Autumn International format. Twickenham's hosting of the Finals Weekend also ensures a major rugby occasion on English soil in November, with tickets expected to be in high demand.
What's Next
The full fixture schedule for the Nations Championship will be confirmed in the coming weeks. Ticket information for the Finals Weekend at Twickenham is available via Allianz Stadium Twickenham. Further details on the competition format are available from World Rugby.
