The International Olympic Committee today announced a comprehensive package of reforms that will reshape the future of the Olympic Games, addressing longstanding concerns about sustainability, athlete welfare, and the relevance of the sporting program.
The reforms, approved unanimously by the IOC's executive board, represent the most significant changes to the Olympic movement in decades. They include the addition of several new sports, mandatory sustainability standards for host cities, and enhanced support systems for competing athletes.
Key Reforms
Among the most notable changes is the requirement that all future host cities must achieve carbon neutrality for the Games, using only renewable energy sources for competition and accommodation venues. Additionally, a new athlete welfare fund will provide mental health support and career transition assistance.
The sporting program will see the inclusion of several emerging sports that are popular with younger audiences, while some traditional events will be modernized with updated formats designed to increase viewer engagement.
