Illinois and Arizona Advance to Final Four with Dominant Elite Eight Victories
The NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament's Final Four field began to take shape on Saturday as No. 3 Illinois and No. 1 Arizona secured convincing Elite Eight victories, punching their tickets to Indianapolis for college basketball's biggest stage.
Illinois defeated No. 9 Iowa 71-59 to reach the Final Four for the first time since 2005, while Arizona dominated No. 2 Purdue 79-64 to advance to its first Final Four since 2001. Both teams will compete on April 4 at Lucas Oil Stadium, with the championship game scheduled for April 6.
Illinois Breaks Through
Freshman sensation Keaton Wagler led Illinois with 25 points in the victory over Iowa. The Illini's defense was the story of the tournament, holding opponents to low scores and effectively protecting the rim and paint throughout their run.
Head coach Brad Underwood joined an elite group of Illinois coaches to reach the Final Four, alongside Bruce Weber (2005), Lou Henson (1989), and Harry Combes (1949, 1951, 1952). The victory represents a breakthrough for a program that has been knocking on the door of elite status in recent years.
Arizona's Freshman Power
Arizona's victory over Purdue was powered by an exceptional performance from its freshman trio. Brayden Burries scored 14 points, Ivan Kharchenkov added 18, and Koa Peat led the way with 20 points. Combined, the three freshmen accounted for 52 of Arizona's 79 points.
Senior guard Jaden Bradley contributed 14 points in what could be his final games in an Arizona uniform. The Wildcats also broke their program record for single-season wins with 36 victories. Their relentless play in the paint has been a hallmark of their tournament success.
Elite Eight Continues
Two more Elite Eight games are scheduled for Sunday, March 29, to determine the final two Final Four participants. No. 1 Michigan faces No. 6 Tennessee at 2:15 p.m. ET, followed by No. 1 Duke taking on No. 2 UConn at 5:05 p.m. ET. Both games will be broadcast on CBS.
Road to Indianapolis
The Final Four promises to be an exciting showcase of college basketball talent. Illinois will be looking to capture its first national championship since 1952, while Arizona seeks its second title after winning in 1997.
The tournament has already produced memorable moments, including Iowa's first Elite Eight appearance since 1987 and several dramatic finishes in earlier rounds.
