Belfast to Host Fleadh Cheoil 2026: City Centre Pedestrianisation Plans Unveiled for 800,000 Visitors
Belfast City Council has unveiled comprehensive plans to pedestrianise the city centre during Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2026, the world's largest celebration of Irish traditional music, which is set to take place from August 2 to 9. The event is expected to attract 800,000 visitors — making it the largest event ever staged in Belfast.
All roads and streets in the city centre will be closed to vehicle traffic, either fully or partially, throughout the Fleadh's duration, with the highest footfall anticipated from Thursday, August 6, onwards.
City Hall as the Centrepiece
The area surrounding City Hall will serve as the location for the main Gig Rig stage, with phased closures to facilitate increased public transport usage into and out of the city centre. The proposed closures will be in effect from 6am on Sunday, August 2, until 5am on Monday, August 10.
Limited additional road closures may also occur before and after the main event for the setup and dismantling of event infrastructure, from Thursday, July 30, to Saturday, August 1, and from Monday, August 10, to Wednesday, August 12.
Transport and Accommodation
Attendees will be encouraged to walk, cycle, or use public transport. Several park-and-ride sites will be established near key arterial routes into Belfast, with daily shuttle services operated by Translink. Temporary campsites will be available at Ormeau Park for tents, Titanic Quarter for motorhomes and caravans, and Falls Park for additional tents.
Provisions will be made for businesses within the city centre event zone, including delivery windows within the road closures and a 24/7 dedicated accreditation and logistics hub.
Historic First for Belfast
This marks the first time Belfast has hosted Fleadh Cheoil, with organisers also confirming its return in August 2027. The opening day will feature a free concert outside City Hall with acts including Sharon Shannon, Goitse, Blackwater Céilí Band, and McPeake.
Councillor Natasha Brennan, Chair of the council's Strategic Policy and Resources Committee, emphasised the importance of residents, businesses, and visitors being aware of the potential impact and planning their activities accordingly. The event is co-hosted with Comhaltas and Ards CCÉ and is anticipated to generate significant tourism and economic benefits for the city.
